Sunday 10th August

The Flying Horse Hotel. 12.00 noon.

WW1 Gallipoli Campaign Remembered

One hundred years ago in early August, 1914, 20,000 part time territorial soldiers from Lancashire were mobilised at the outbreak of the war. A battalion of these, (roughly 1000 soldiers) the 6th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers were principally men from Middleton, Todmorden and Rochdale. These brave men would ultimately proceed to the beaches of Gallipoli, and where many gave up their lives.

Sunday will see a dramatic re-enactment of the moment these men were mobilised for war. Todmorden British Legion will follow in the footsteps of the men of August 1914 by marching the 12 miles from their home town to Rochdale. In support of Middleton's contribution to the Gallipoli campaign we ask you to join us in Rochdale at the Flying Horse Hotel. Middleton historians and authors of the books 'The Gallipoli Oak' and 'Doing Our Bit' Martin Prudy and Ian Dawson will lead the Middleton congregation as we applaud and join the Todmorden British Legion in their last short distance into Rochdale town centre. A new parade will then be formed at 1.45pm, with members of the public following standard bearers, members of veterans’ association and local military cadets into Rochdale centre and on to the town cenotaph for a short ceremony and sounding of the Last Post at around 2.15pm. Refreshments will follow in Rochdale Town Hall.
